Madrasah of Muhammad-Rahim-khan

Madrassah of Muhammad Rahim-khan is located opposite to the gates of Kunya-ark Madrassah is one of the biggest in Khiva. It was constructed in 1876 by order of Seyid Muhammad-Rahim II (1863-1910), known also as a poet under assumed name of Feruzshah. In 1873 the Russian army invaded the khanate and established Russian protectorate. The rectangular building of madrassah has fouraivan courtyard and small towers at corners. Wings with five-beam arcade of niches flank its portal. Hudjras are roofed with "balkhi" domes and have utility rooms in addition to dwelling rooms.
